Teacher Training Materials of Professor Dr David Ngin Sian Pau
The problem of what grammar to teach is comparatively simple.  Common-sense tells us that pupils learning English must know the Plural forms of common Nouns, such as ‘child,’ “penny,’ ‘fish,’ and the commonly used Tenses forms of the Verbs they will use. Such item should be learnt and remembered.

What you have to do

1.  Write the two words on separate papers.  Stick each piece of paper on the top LEFT AND RIGHT
corner of the black board or the wall before the classroom visibly.

2.  Write the two words “the scarf “and “you” on the board.

3. Tell the students that they have to point MUCH when the teacher says, THIS SCARF and point TALL
when the teacher says, “you”. Repeat two or three times and then ask one of the students do the same.
Let them do it as fast as possible. Any students who make mistakes in pointing the right word should
stand up and do it alone.

4. Remember, when you choose a student to do something, it’s advisable that you use
lucky draw system

that students know you have no partiality in asking students to do what you want them to do. We will
study how to do it later.

5. And finally, ask the students do an activity in which the students will be able to use the two sentences
above or other similar sentences in a conversation. The main focus for the activity is students should
be able to speak what they learnt.  It could be pair work, group work or team work.

Other form of the same method;

SINCE and FOR
Likewise, you can also choose some other grammatical words and do as we have learnt just now.  For example, write SINCE and FOR on separate papers if you are going to teach present perfect tenses.

Make two sentences like this:
1. I have been looking for a new job since 2006.
2. I have been using this car for 5 years.

Write 2006 and 5 years on the board and as soon as you finished reading 2006, let the students
say or point SINCE.  When you say “5 YEARS” let them say or point FOR so that their minds
would be familiar with how to use
since and for.

Finally, do the activity of Job Interview. Let students work in pairs, as a boss and a candidate.
Let each pair does the activity before the class.
